Putting Leftovers to Good Use

A little dab of veggies and a bit of meat, not enough to throw away and yet not quite enough to save either; what do we do? Freeze them! Stick the leftovers each in their own, little freezer bag/container and place in the freezer. After awhile, there will be enough ingredients available to throw in a crockpot. After simmering all together through the night or during the day, a delicious stew will be ready for your family to enjoy. Leftover vegetables and meat aren't the only food worth saving; the water the vegetables were cooked in can also be saved and frozen. Meat broth too freezes well and can be used in stews or when cooking rice and pasta. By themselves those little dabs of leftovers aren't enough to save, but frozen and combined later on, deliciously mouth-watering meals can be created. Not only will your tastebuds be happy, the smell of homemade soup cooking will permeate the home with a warm, homey scent that says "somebody loves me". While homemade vegetable beef soup/stew may be the easiest meal to put together with frozen leftovers, it isn't the only option available. There are many casseroles and side dishes that can utilize frozen leftovers. Just remember to stock up on freezer bags and/or other containers for freezing extra servings and leftovers. Freezing leftover portions of veggies, meat, and the water or broth they were cooked in is Thursday's Thrifty Tip.
