A Love Affair to Remember

Spring's flowers will soon be held in the hands of blushing brides as they float down the isle to enter a state of marital bliss.  These brides are presently walking through a season of blissful delirium commonly referred to as romance.   It's that marvelous, wonderful, tremendously fantastic ecstasy portrayed in romance novels and media presentations known to some as chick flicks.   Can you hear the sighs as all of those smiles   spread across our lips? Enjoyable?  Oh yes.  Fun?  Most definitely.  But is this popular portrayal of love really, truly real?  Is this what romance is, for reals?  Yes, I believe that the popular notion of romance, the I'm becoming a melting pool of butta at your feet version, is indeed one of the many seasons of romance.

Seasons of romance?  That's right, romance has seasons.  Romance hides within it's depths secret mysteries of blessing.  While heart-pounding, starry eyes, and sighs of bliss are real, they are but one of the many faces romance wears.  Those who are strong and brave enough to see, discover the true wonders of romance, the rarely shared clues to the great mystery.

What are the secrets romance hides?   That is part of the mystery.  No one can tell you the sweet treasures romance hides; they have to be discovered.  I can share this: if you are willing to look where you haven't looked before and see in a way you've never before seen, romance is there.  It's all around, in the simple and everyday.  That's where the truth about romance is found, in the ordinary.  When one is looking through the eyes of true love, ordinary mysteriously becomes extraordinary.  Nothing changes, yet everything is different.

No matter a person's age or how many years a couple has been married, romance abounds for all.  We just have to be looking like God looks and seeing like He sees.  Wait a minute.  I can almost hear the intake of breath and see the doubt entering the eyes, romance and God?  God is the originator of romance.  He created it, for us.  The God of the universe is the ultimate romantic.  Don't believe me?  Read Song of Solomon, read the Psalms, read Esther, and Hosea and basically every other book of the Bible.  The Bible is filled with romance.  God is love.(I John 4:8)  Romance is when life is seen through the eyes of true love (God) (I Corinthians 13) making the ordinary extraordinary.  Plainly stated, romance is the story of the Bible.

Each of us has a unique romantic fingerprint to place on our covenant relationships.  What screams romance for one couple may not even be a whisper for another.  Different seasons speak differing languages of love.  As we enter the upcoming wedding season, let us each open our eyes and view the one we love through the eyes of Him who first loved us.  Let's allow the mystery of romance, the ordinary becoming extraordinary to sweeten our homes each day.  Who knows?  we might find our hearts wildly thumping, our eyes sparkling, and us melted in a pool of butta at the feet of the one we love. Better still, we might discover the wild thrill of a secret known only by ourselves and our beloved as we share a look, a quick glance where the upraised eyebrow tells a tale of two.

As for My Beloved and I, we're going to grab some iced tea, sit down, and enjoy being together, just he and I.   What is that naughty little gleam in his eye?  What's that he says?  He says that's the reason I married him, because he's naughty?  I can't help it; I'm laughing with delight.  How can I help but laugh at this naughty man who is ever so nice?  This Beloved Man of God who loves me big and sure and strong.  Many seasons of romance have grown in twenty years of marriage.  Some were wild and heavy; others were soft and sweet.  All were perfect.  Exactly perfect for where and who we were then and now.  We're finding ourselves smack dab in the middle of a love affair with God and each other, A Love Affair to Remember.
