The Correspondence of Friendship

“You write me about European cathedrals, and I stick you with the song of the sandbur.” were the words recently sent from one friend to another via email. Variety, it’s the spice of life. Two women, one a homeschooling ranch wife with six children, another a woman who lives in the city and travels to foreign countries, engage in delightful conversations. Thought-provoking, faith-building discussions are carried on via email in random spurts in between each woman’s busy life. On still another day two other women, complete strangers until an introduction email from a joint friend, happily share their homeschooling journeys and daily struggles.

Friendships that without the invention of email would most likely never have taken place, not only exist but thrive with the typing of keys and clicking of send. As a child growing up, email was virtually unknown. Now, it being replaced by texting and other social networking sites. A hundred years ago, these women could have enjoyed the same delightful conversations and discussions. However their lives would have been penned on paper then sent on its way in the mail. Instead of seconds, months or weeks would have gone by before a reply was received.

Correspondence. Two people sharing their lives with each other through the use of words. Sharing joys, sorrows, heartaches, and love. Words, what a powerful tool for good or evil. Let us choose them wisely and use them well.
