BELL, BOOK AND CANTELOUPE
~ Lola Schancer ~
Mom, our own dear kitchen wizard,
Magically, with sleight-of-hand
Could make a melon or a gizzard
Taste like fare from fairy land.
When she, with wisdom rich as Plato's
Etched two comic eyes of brown
On smiling spinach-mouthed potatoes
Whimsy took the shape of clown.
It was those eyes that did the trick!
We kids ate all (may God forgive her)
Giggling gaily at each lick---
Not knowing they were made of liver.
